The Loony Bin Comedy Club presents Robert Hawkins
Breckenridge Village Shopping Center

Back in school, comedian Robert Hawkins was told he suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder. He always thought he just suffered from a case of not liking school all that much. Turns out, that condition would continue as he moved into the workforce, where he found he didn't like having a job any better than he did getting an education. That's why, when Hawkins was fired, he made the decision to go into the
military. Don't worry, his reasoning didn't make sense to anyone else either. After three years serving as an expert combat medic, Hawkins made the next logical career move and went into standup comedy. Since taking the stage ten years ago, Hawkins has released two comedy albums, worked as a writer and guest star on the sitcom Titus, and starred in his own Comedy Central Presents standup special. If
you’re a fan of clever, well written comedy this is a show you cannot miss. For more information, visit www.myspace.com/roberthawkins.

Tickets: Thursday, $6.00 and Friday & Saturday $9.00.

"Downtown Nonfiction" Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum

Historic Arkansas Museum’s Second Floor Gallery is proud to present John Kushmaul: Downtown Nonfiction.

Downtown Nonfiction showcases the artist’s current infatuation with the architecture of Little Rock’s downtown area.  “Most of the works are based upon photographs I take of the city,” said Kushmaul of his most recent series of paintings.  “Little Rock serves as a convenient subject because of the variety of architecture covering the history of modern life in Arkansas.”  He cites power poles, wires and satellite dishes, aspects of the city’s technological advancement, as indications of what he calls “the layer of technology that covers this history.” The style of his painting, too, comes to take on a somewhat progressive quality.  His brushstrokes are loose, colorful and playful, but simultaneously controlled and deliberate.  Kushmaul’s tendency to experiment with vibrant colors reflects another recurring theme within his body of work: the light of the seasons.

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am- 5pm Monday through Saturday, 1-5pm on Sunday.

Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens. The Historic Arkansas Museum Store is open 10am-4:30pm, Monday through Saturday and 1-4pm on Sunday.

August 20 - November 9, 2008
"Transformation and Creation" Exhibit
Arkansas Arts Center

Transformation and Creation finds the often divergent works of Laura Lam Tze Carenbauer and V.L. Cox side by side.  Carenbauer, originally from Hong Kong, explores the qualities of a wide range of media in her work—wood, rocks, string, pastel, plastic, soy sauce.  Her images are often heavily abstracted and reflect her confusion with moving to the United States.  “I was the outsider.  I became more a watcher and less a judge.  I think that my art reflects the transformation I have undergone from the passive state of watching to the more active position of seeing,” she said of the collection.

V.L. Cox is a North Little Rock painter whose flair for interrelating texture, form and color is simply unparalleled.  She is constantly exploring new techniques and ideas, with an avidness that she compares to having an insatiable hunger for self-education.  Her works range from abstracted depictions of intangible concepts like fear or joy to hyper-literal experiments with representation, as in a series of  Southern people she painted on screen doors, interacting with them in ways that convey the historical eras during which the doors may have been built.

Museum hours: 9am-5pm, Monday through Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18 and $1.50 for senior citizens.

August 22 - 23, 2008
"Southern Baptist Sissies"
The Weekend Theater, 7th and Chester

By Del Shores.

A roller coaster of a play that takes audiences from heights of hilarity through outrageous anger, and into caves of depression and out again, this political and religious commentary is the story of four gay men in a Southern Baptist Church in Texas and the various ways they cope when they discover urges within themselves that go against the teachings of their church. The damage of religion that preaches intolerance and foments self-hatred and the repercussions of this brand of religion are seen throughout the boys’ trek from pre-adolescence to adulthood: the pain, the doubt, the self-loathing, the confusion. The script weaves together the characters’ stories inserting Bible passages that support, contradict and call into question the fundamentalists’ teachings about homosexuality. Directed by Ralph Hyman.

Fridays and Saturdays, curtain times are at 7:30pm, for special Sunday showings (Musicals only) curtain times are at 2:30pm.

Tickets: $14.00 ($10.00 for students and seniors over 65) for Dramas and $18.00 ($14.00 for students and seniors over 65) for Musicals. Tickets can be purchased at the theater with cash, check, Mastercard or Visa.

Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" Speech to Be Commemorated
9:30 AM
Clinton Presidential Center

The 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech will be commemorated with a day of festivities at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center. King delivered the famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in conjunction with the 1963 March on Washington.

Former President Clinton has called King's speech "the greatest political speech of my lifetime" and "the clearest clarion call to a more perfect union."

Sponsored by The College of Aspiring Artists (TCAA) of North Little Rock, the William J. Clinton Foundation and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, the commemoration will feature films and entertainment. Special guests will be Gracie Carter of Little Rock who participated in the 1963 march and Joshua and Andrew Withers, sons of the late Ernest Withers of Memphis, a noted civil rights photographer. Withers’ photographs were instrumental in the documentation and establishment of the Little Rock Central High Museum and Visitor Center which led to the Little Rock Central High National Historic Site. Some of Withers’ photographs and prints will be on display during the commemoration.

Admission to the King events will be free for the general public; however, regular tickets must be purchased to tour the rest of the Clinton Center Library.

Activities will begin at 9:30 a.m., featuring video excerpts of King's speeches, portions of a documentary about Congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis and a special program by KATV-Channel 7 entitled "Dr. Martin Luther King in Arkansas." Reservations for these films are not required.

A "Tribute to the March on Washington: An Entertainment Celebration" will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Both performances will include remarks by Carter and a salute to Withers as well as local and national entertainment.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling 501-748-0419 or emailing vvservices@clintonfoundation.org.

Additionally, segments of the film "Eyes on the Prize" will be shown from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Reservations are not required.

"In addition to Clinton School students, we hope that students of all ages will join us for one of the two entertainment celebrations," said Rev. Arthur L. Hunt Jr., of TCAA. "This is a very historic day where we want to reflect the past, inspect the present and project the future."

"Vital Signs"
The Weekend Theater, 7th and Chester

By Jane Martin.

With new signs of off-beat humor, rage and imagination in the female voice, Jane Martin proves again the infinite resonance of monologue form. Moving in new directions, Martin introduces a gallery of characters who shatter expectation, reinvent the ordinary and dignify the bizarre. With humor and pointed satire, the eclectic characters in Martin's play provide glimpses into the minds and hearts of over thirty complex women in this funny, unnerving, perceptive and offbeat tour-de-force for mature audiences. These monologues offer a collage about contemporary woman in all her warmth and majesty, fear and frustration, her joy and sadness. Directed by Julie Atkins.
