“You Fit into Me: Works by David Carpenter and Lindsey Maestri” Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum
You Fit into Me features two sculptors born in Arkansas, completing their Masters of Fine Arts degrees at Louisiana State University. David Carpenter and Lindsey Maestri both create contemporary sculptures marked by bold interplays of materials. With his work, Carpenter questions what it is to be a man; while Maestri creates un-wearable clothing that highlight some of our most human gestures.

"Alice's Wonderland" Exhibit
Museum of Discovery
Scientific twists, mathematical turns, literary puzzles and more await visitors who visit the Museum of Discovery.
Alice's Wonderland is a new, interactive exhibit based on Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. With 2,500 square feet of hands-on experiences to explore, people of all ages become as curious as Alice in a journey that makes the unknown more familiar, maybe even logical, and most certainly fun.
Visitors are reminded of the story in each exhibit area through quotes from the original book and are delighted by encounters with some of the tale's famous characters. The exhibit features areas such as the Riverbank, the Hall of Doors, and The Mad Hatter's Tea Party.
The target audience for Alice's Wonderland is children ages 3 to 10, together with their parents and teachers but the topic and interactive nature of the exhibit provides broad appeal: day cares, scouts, and youth groups, local families looking for fun outing, and out of state visitors seeking a fascinating summer experience.
There is no additional charge to experience the exhibit; entry is included in Museum admission.

Exhibition: Drawings of Mexico by Louis Freund

In the late 1950’s Louis and Elsie Freund traveled to Mexico to draw famous archeological sites. The series of drawings exhibited here features The Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, Mitla, and Olmec sites. Elsie and Louis Freund started the UALR Art Department when it was Little Rock Junior College.

Historic Arkansas Museum’s Trinity Gallery for Arkansas Artists is proud to present Aspects of Abstraction: Donnie Copeland and Gene Sparling, on display today through October 31, 2010.
Arkadelphia artist Donnie Copeland combines painting in a way that places a greater emphasis on the “stuff” of which paintings are made. His work combines both the enjoyment of the material of painting and the process of painting. The works are an interplay of the artist’s response to reality and realism.
Gene Sparling’s sculpture draws upon the warmth and beauty of wood. Each piece of wood contains layer upon layer of intricate design. With every cut and shaving he makes, from every angle and contour, Sparling reveals another view. Sparling lives in the Ouachita Mountains near Hot Springs.

Synopsis: Jacinto Yanez, a peasant, owns a ranch in the middle of land owned by foreign oil companies. Jacinto and his wife, Carmen, live there with their son Domingo and his wife, Guadalupe. Mr. Perez visits Jacinto to offer him large amounts of money for his land but is refused. One of the investors gets angry over the refusal and eventually kills Jacinto. The murder is discovered and the investor flees.Wednesday, November 10: "Los Albañiles" (1976)

Synopsis: In a building site, the watchman is beaten to death. The police treat it as just another murder, however leads show a wave of corruption from the owner to the most humble union involving them all in death.

Exhibition: "Raices"
Arkansas Studies Institute, Atrium Gallery
Born and raised in Coahuila, Mexico, the artist known as CH3MEX moved to the States in 1993. He has worked in design, painting, screen printing, mural sculptures and construction. He has traveled all over Mexico, the Eastern US, the Southwest and Southern United States. He is one of the founders of the Hunab ku movement, an artist collective focused on social art, its expression and influence. Through the use of workshops, shows, events, projects, the collective educates its members and audience about the expression and culture of Mexican-American social art.
His work usually focuses on the reaction of both societies Mexican and American. He tends to focus on issues affecting Mexican/Latino communities and their reaction, raids, the wall, immigration, violence, trafficking, etc. He tries to represent the Mexican presence in the United States throughout the art.

Exhibition: In Search of Pancho Villa: The Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916
MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E 9th Street
The Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916 was an attempt by American forces to capture General Francisco “Pancho” Villa following his attack on a small border town and military camp at Columbus, New Mexico on March 16, 1916. The attack highlighted a long history of animosity between the United States and Mexico dating back to the Mexican War of 1846-47 and the Occupation of Veracruz in 1914. Villa proved elusive to the American forces and President Woodrow Wilson issued the first mobilization of National Guard forces in U.S. history as General John J. Pershing pursued Villa into Mexico with an army of 11,000 men. Finally, on January 12, 1917, President Wilson ordered U.S. troops out of Mexico. Although Villa was never captured, the training received by American soldiers provided a valuable introduction to modern military techniques and for our nation’s rapidly approaching involvement in World War I.

The exhibit reveals the early development of a dual image, with Arkansawyers being portrayed as coarse, illiterate, and violent backwoodsmen on one hand, while also lifted up as noble frontiersmen—independent, honest and humble. Brooks Blevins, curator of the exhibit, is the Noel Boyd Associate Professor of Ozarks Studies at Missouri State University. He is the author of Arkansas/Arkansaw: How Bear Hunters, Hillbillies and Good Ol’ Boys Defined a State and Hill Folks: A History of Arkansas Ozarkers and Their Image.

River Trails Rentals, 200 S. Olive, N. Little Rock
The Razor Rock Relay is a fun and easy-going race that pits teams through a course running through the riverfront areas of Little Rock and North Little Rock. The route will be divided into sections, with each participant passing the baton to a new teammate at each section. The majority of the course will be ridden on bicycle, and each section will challenge participants with a Razorback-themed trivia question before allowing them to proceed.
The race begins at River Trail Station in North Little Rock, and heads westward along the river to cross the Junction Bridge into Little Rock and on to the Clinton Presidential Library. Racers will then return back through the River Market and across the Junction Bridge to the Riverfront Park gate near Dickey Stephens Park.
Teams must consist of 5 members each, and can be businesses, families, Louisiana fans, and Razorback fans, whatever. Children are encouraged to participate, although at least one teammate must be18 or older.
There is no fee required to participate.The winning team will receive a regular or holiday event space rental at River Trail Station Party and Events center, a first place prize worth up to$500. Non-winners will receive consolation prizes and some disappointing photographs of their performance.
The race runs from 11am - 12noon Monday, September 6th and promises plenty of twists, turns and surprises for everyone. Sign up today!

Laura Terry Explores the Southern Landscape (Exhibit)

Natural Wonders: Paintings and Drawings by Laura Terry is presented in conjunction with the Arkansas Arts Council (AAC), an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. This exhibit was created with resources identified in the Arkansas Artist Registry, a program of AAC.
Laura Terry’s paintings capture what she calls “ghosts,” or aspects of the Southern landscape that she believes often go unnoticed. She says, “There is no need to search far for these natural wonders, no need to look beyond the garden.” Terry borrows imagery from the natural world and infuses her painting with rich colors and textures. Originally from Georgia, Terry is an assistant professor in architecture at the Faye Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas where she has worked since 1998.
Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm. Monday through Saturday, 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens.

Michael Beschloss weaves colorful anecdotes and brilliant inside analysis of U.S. presidents with an informed, detailed understanding of their leadership styles. He provides a perspective on today's leadership from the vantage-point of history. Trained in leadership at the Harvard Business School, Beschloss demonstrates how the qualities of political leadership lend themselves to more effective leadership in business as well. Beschloss is NBC News' Presidential Historian and appears regularly on Meet the Press, Today and other NBC News programs. Beschloss is a prolific author of many best-selling books including Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789-1989, which describes crucial times when courageous presidents took career-threatening risks and overcame obstacles to dramatically change the future of the United States.

Brown Bag Lunch Lecture - Fent and Pete: Arkansas’s Southwestern Humor

Arkansas schoolchildren know C. F. M. Noland as the guy who carried the 1836 state constitution to Washington, and adults know him as the man who killed the governor’s nephew in a duel. Not many people today, though, remember him as one of the nation’s best known writers for a few antebellum years. Noland was famous, though briefly, for his humorous writing and his creation of an Ozarks character who commented freely on life in Arkansas and beyond.
After finishing high school in El Dorado, Arkansas, George Lankford received degrees from LSU, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Indiana University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in folklore in 1975. He returned to Arkansas, where he taught for twenty-five years at Arkansas College (now Lyon College) in Batesville. In his teaching career he taught courses in anthropology, religion, Bible, local history (Ozarks), and folklore. Lankford retired in 2001 from Lyon, where he was the Pauline M. and Brooks Bradley Professor in the Social Sciences and chair of the Social Science Division. He has published a number of books and articles on Indian topics and on Arkansas history and culture.
