The score features music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by Brian Crawley. The musical score blends a number of styles, from gospel and bluegrass to Memphis blues to honky-tonk rock. Set in 1964, the story opens with Violet Karl waiting for a Greyhound Bus in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, with her ticket, a suitcase and a heart full of expectations. For a moment she sees herself as a young girl, carefree, before her face was horribly disfigured in an accident. A local’s nosy question prompts her to look forward to the healing she expects to receive from a televangelist in Tulsa that will help her transcend her provincial little town and the eventual discovery of the true meaning of beauty. “This show is all about taking that first step toward healing. We all have scars, whether they are physical, like Violet’s, or emotional,” said Director Sarah Scott Blakey. “The traumas from our past keep us from moving forward, saying yes to life, and being our most authentic selves. When Violet steps onto that Greyhound bus at the beginning of the show, she has no idea that her pilgrimage will not only take her to a healing preacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma but also on a journey of love, experience and friendship that will help her see that true beauty is more than skin deep.”  Violet features an 11-member cast. In the title role of Violet is Hannah M. Sawyer of Little Rock with Young Vi played by Izzy Hammonds of Benton. Chris Straw is Flick, and Brandon Nichols is Monty. The ensemble includes Josh Campbell, Stefanie Johnston, Duane Jackson, Samuel Rhee, Drew Ellis, Rachel Brown, and Danette Scott Perry. Lauren Naeyaert is the stage manager. Violet premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 1997 and opened on Broadway in 2014 at the American Airlines Theatre in a Roundabout Theatre Company production.
