The play, directed by Laurel Burnette, is set around 1911-1915 in a small Michigan town, where a young nun has been murdered, and a priest is on trial for her murder. The story weaves back and forth in time between Sister Rita’s arrival at the parish and Father Rivard’s trial. Their relationship spells tragedy, but the extent of their sacrifice and the identity of the murderer is not revealed until the end. The play, based on a true story, debuted in 1971 and appeared on Broadway in 1976.
