You do know where cheese dip originated, don’t you? If you’re thinking central Arkansas, you would be correct! Arkansas’s signature dish just might be cheese dip. Concocted in 1935 by Blackie Donnelly, a Mexico native who moved to central Arkansas, this creamy elixir has put Little Rock on the map as the undisputed cheese dip capital of the world. Today, Little Rock is home to the annual World Cheese Dip Championship, and is one of multiple stops along the Arkansas Cheese Dip Trail.
The 8th Annual World Cheese Dip Championship Saturday, October 20, comes complete with amateur and professional divisions. Make your vote count and pick your favorite. All proceeds benefit Harmony Health Clinic (HHC). HHC provides free medical and dental services to the uninsured in Pulaski County. Professional Tip: Bring your muffin tin to sample multiple dips at once.
More Trivia: The dip became a social media sensation in a recent Twitter congressional debate between U.S. Senators Tom Cotton (AR) and Ted Cruz (TX). When challenged, a Little Rock-based team’s recipe reigned supreme in a Capitol Hill blind taste test.
